Chester County, Pennsylvania

Chester County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 433,501.

Geography The county has a total area of 1,968 km² (760 mi²). 1,958 km² (756 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 433,501 people, 157,905 households, and 113,375 families residing in the county. The population density is 221/km² (573/mi²). There are 163,773 housing units at an average density of 84 persons/km² (217 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.21% White, 6.24% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.95% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.35% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 3.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 157,905 households out of which 35.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.50% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 28.20% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 30.40% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.10 males.
