The oldest university in Central Europe, Charles University (Univerzita Karlova) was founded in Prague on April 7, 1348, by Charles IV, then the Holy Roman Emperor and the king of Bohemia. Devoted to studia generalia, the newly founded university had four faculties: Arts, Law, Medicine, and Theology.
