Chariton County, Missouri

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,990 km² (768 mi²). 1,958 km² (756 mi²) of it is land and 32 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.61% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 8,438 people, 3,469 households, and 2,345 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (11/mi²). There are 4,250 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.99% White, 3.19% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,469 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 6.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.40% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.94.
