Chang-lin Tien

Chang-lin Tien, 田長霖 (July 24, 1935 - October 29, 2002) was the first Asian American and Chinese American to head a major U.S. university.

He was born with a slightly different name in China, Chang-li Tien. Mr. Tien earned his doctorate at Princeton University in New Jersey.

He was the chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley from 1990 to 1997.

He was 67 years old when he died and had been in failing health since suffering a stroke two years before his death while undergoing a diagnostic test for a brain tumor.
