After having studied law at the University of Parma, he devoted himself to writing. In 1930 he moved to Milan, where he worked for publisher Rizzoli. In 1939, he met Vittorio De Sica: this was the beginning of a partnership which produced some of the masterpieces of the neorealistic[?] season, Sciusciŕ[?], Ladri di biciclette, Miracolo a Milano[?], Umberto D[?]. Zavattini also worked with other celebrated directors of the Italian and international cinema: Michelangelo Antonioni, Alessandro Blasetti[?], Mauro Bolognini[?], Mario Camerini[?], René Clement[?], Federico Fellini, Pietro Germi[?], Alberto Lattuada[?], Mario Monicelli[?], Elio Petri[?], Dino Risi[?], Roberto Rossellini, Mario Soldati[?], Luchino Visconti, and many other.
