Cattaraugus Reservation, Cattaraugus County, New York

Cattaraugus Reservation is an Indian reservation located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the Indian reservation had a total population of 388. The majority of the reservation is in Erie County and a small part is in Chautauqua County.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the Indian reservation has a total area of 15.5 km² (6.0 mi²). 14.9 km² (5.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.68% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 388 people, 127 households, and 94 families residing in the Indian reservation. The population density is 26.0/km² (67.4/mi²). There are 136 housing units at an average density of 9.1/km² (23.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the Indian reservation is 4.38% White, 0.00% African American, 95.62% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 4.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 127 households out of which 49.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.3% are married couples living together, 35.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 20.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.06 and the average family size is 3.52.

In the Indian reservation the population is spread out with 36.1% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 2.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.9 males.

The median income for a household in the Indian reservation is $27,292, and the median income for a family is $26,458. Males have a median income of $21,750 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the Indian reservation is $12,443. 24.5% of the population and 25.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.4% are under the age of 18 and 0.0% are 65 or older.
