Carroll County is a county located in the U.S. State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 29,245. Its county seat is Hillsville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,237 km² (478 mi²). 1,234 km² (476 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 29,245 people, 12,186 households, and 8,786 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (61/mi²). There are 14,680 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.97% White, 0.44% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 1.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,186 households out of which 27.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.70% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.10% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 26.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,597, and the median income for a family is $36,755. Males have a median income of $25,907 versus $19,697 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,475. 12.50% of the population and 8.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.70% are under the age of 18 and 14.10% are 65 or older.
