Carlyle Group

The Carlyle Group is a private investment firm specializing in management-led buyouts, and equity investments. The industries the group specializes in include aerospace, defense, automotive, consumer and industrial, telecommunications, and others. The Group's aerospace and defense investments are a source of controversy, since the Group is alleged to have connections to the Middle East, and detractors state defense industries cannot remain profitable unless wars and threats of war continue to occur. However, its investments are focused on Japan, Korea, and Europe.

The Carlyle Group has many political connections. Famous partners of the Carlyle Group include James Baker III, former United States Secretary of State in the Administration of George H. W. Bush ; Frank C. Carlucci[?], former United States Secretary of Defense from 1987 to 1989; and Arthur Levitt[?], chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) under President Bill Clinton. A major investor in the Carlyle Group, until October 2001, was the bin Laden family of Saudi Arabia. Among those associated with Carlyle are former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, former U.K. prime minister John Major, and former president of the Philippines Fidel Ramos[?]. Clients of the Group include the bin Laden family of Saudi Arabia and George Soros.
