Buchanan is a city located in Haralson County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 941. The city is the county seat of Haralson County6.

Geography Buchanan is located at 33°48'6" North, 85°11'1" West (33.801726, -85.183506)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.90% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 941 people, 345 households, and 221 families residing in the city. The population density is 247.2/km² (638.6/mi²). There are 380 housing units at an average density of 99.8/km² (257.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.14% White, 11.37% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 345 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% are married couples living together, 14.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,269, and the median income for a family is $26,964. Males have a median income of $24,205 versus $16,458 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,821. 22.7% of the population and 20.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.4% are under the age of 18 and 19.8% are 65 or older.
