The brown algae are a large group of multicellular algae, including various sorts of seaweed, for instance kelp. Their distinctive greenish-brown color comes from the pigment fucoxanthin[?]. They are included among the stramenopiles, together with the golden algae, diatoms, and other such forms. The best known genus is Fucus, which has been used as a source of iodine.
