Brown County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 6,950. Its county seat is Mt. Sterling, Illinois[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 796 km² (307 mi²). 792 km² (306 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,950 people, 2,108 households, and 1,380 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (23/mi²). There are 2,456 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.29% White, 18.20% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 3.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,108 households out of which 29.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% are married couples living together, 6.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.50% are non-families. 30.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 17.80% under the age of 18, 12.60% from 18 to 24, 37.50% from 25 to 44, 19.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 174.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 194.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,445, and the median income for a family is $43,207. Males have a median income of $24,888 versus $20,558 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,629. 8.50% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.00% are under the age of 18 and 10.00% are 65 or older.
