Menhaden are two genera of marine fish in the family Clupeidae.
Genus Brevoortia
Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) occur in large numbers in the North Atlantic, ranging from Nova Scotia, Canada to central Florida, USA. They are edible and are also used for oil and fertilizer. In recent years their population has been dropping due to overfishing. Also called mossbunker, bug fish, and fat back.
