Bibb County, Alabama

Bibb County, Alabama is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of William W. Bibb, a Governor of Alabama. As of 2000 the population is 20,826. Its county seat is Centreville.

History Cahawba County was established on February 7, 1818, named for the Cahawba River[?], ultimately from the Choctaw for "water above" with its county seat at Cahawba[?]. In 1820, it was renamed Bibb County.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,622 km² (626 mi²). 1,614 km² (623 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 20,826 people, 7,421 households, and 5,580 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (33/mi²). There are 8,345 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.66% White, 22.20% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,421 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.40% are married couples living together, 12.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 30.90% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 11.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 106.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,420, and the median income for a family is $37,230. Males have a median income of $30,413 versus $21,070 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,105. 20.60% of the population and 14.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.60% are under the age of 18 and 18.80% are 65 or older.
