Beltrami County is a county located in the U.S. State of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 39,650. Its county seat is Bemidji6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,914 km² (3,056 mi²). 6,489 km² (2,505 mi²) of it is land and 1,425 km² (550 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.01% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 39,650 people, 14,337 households, and 9,749 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (16/mi²). There are 16,989 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.66% White, 0.36% African American, 20.36% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,337 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.30% are married couples living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.00% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.70% under the age of 18, 13.90% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 20.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,392, and the median income for a family is $40,345. Males have a median income of $30,434 versus $22,045 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,497. 17.60% of the population and 12.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.70% are under the age of 18 and 12.20% are 65 or older.
