Being There

Being There is a 1979 film which tells the story of a gardener who has been sheltered from the world by his employer. When the old man dies, the simple gardener must go out into the real world, where his confused comments are taken by jaded society as profound bits of wisdom. It stars Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, Melvyn Douglas, Jack Warden[?], Richard A. Dysart[?] and Richard Basehart.

It was adapted by Robert C. Jones[?] (uncredited) and Jerzy Kosinski from the novel by Kosinski. It was directed by Hal Ashby[?].

It won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (Melvyn Douglas) and was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
