Battle Royale (film)

Battle Royale (2000) (バットル ロヤール or Batoru rowaiairu) is a controversial Japanese film starring Kitano Takeshi, adapted from a novel, set in a dystopian future Japan wherein a group of high school students are chosen annually to participate in a game. They are placed on a desert island and forced to kill each other; if more than one person is left alive after three days, they are all killed.

It was adapted by Kenta Fukasaku[?] from the novel by Koshun Takami[?]. The book and film bear some parallels to the story The Most Dangerous Game[?].

The film was directed by longtime Japanese director Fukasaku Kinji[?]. He was also hired to direct a sequel, Battle Royale II[?], but died of prostate cancer before he could finish. His son completed the film in his stead.
