Bamberg County, South Carolina

Bamberg County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 16,658. Its county seat is Bamberg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,024 km² (395 mi²). 1,019 km² (393 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 16,658 people, 6,123 households, and 4,255 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 7,130 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 36.47% White, 62.50% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,123 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.60% are married couples living together, 21.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 12.90% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 88.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,007, and the median income for a family is $29,360. Males have a median income of $25,524 versus $19,191 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,584. 27.80% of the population and 23.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 35.00% are under the age of 18 and 25.80% are 65 or older.
