Allen County is a county located in the U.S. State of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 108,473. Its county seat is Lima6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,054 km² (407 mi²). 1,047 km² (404 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.60% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 108,473 people, 40,646 households, and 28,208 families residing in the county. The population density is 104/km² (268/mi²). There are 44,245 housing units at an average density of 42/km² (109/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.95% White, 12.19% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 1.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 40,646 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 12.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,048, and the median income for a family is $44,723. Males have a median income of $35,546 versus $23,537 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,511. 12.10% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.00% are under the age of 18 and 9.60% are 65 or older.
