Alakanuk is a city located in Wade Hampton Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 652.

Geography Alakanuk is located at 62°41'5" North, 164°38'43" West (62.684616, -164.645414)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 106.2 km² (41.0 mi²). 83.8 km² (32.3 mi²) of it is land and 22.5 km² (8.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.14% water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 652 people, 139 households, and 118 families residing in the city. The population density is 7.8/km² (20.2/mi²). There are 160 housing units at an average density of 1.9/km² (4.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 1.99% White, 0.00% African American, 95.40% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 139 households out of which 59.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.1% are non-families. 10.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.69 and the average family size is 5.19.

In the city the population is spread out with 44.6% under the age of 18, 12.9% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 13.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 20 years. For every 100 females there are 111.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 109.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,346, and the median income for a family is $26,500. Males have a median income of $19,792 versus $32,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $6,884. 33.8% of the population and 32.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.1% are under the age of 18 and 25.8% are 65 or older.
