Academic organizations typically have a rather rigid set of ranks. Within the United States the hierarchy of ranks are

Full Professor
Associate Professor
Assistant Professor
Post-doctoral fellow
Graduate student which include teaching assistants[?] and research assistants[?]
Undergraduate

There is a parallel system of administrative ranks
