The 16550 UART (universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter) is a version of the 16450 UART[?] with a 16-byte FIFObuffer. Now revised to the 16550A. It is a microprocessor designed for implementing the electrical interface for serial communication[?]; it can be used to implement RS-232, and is commonly found in personal computers.
