Zanesville, Ohio

Zanesville is a city located in Muskingum County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,586. It is the county seat of Muskingum County6.

Zanesville was settled by members of the Zane family who were early residents of the Ohio river valley. Novelist Zane Grey was a member of the family and born in Zanesville.

Geography Zanesville is located at 39°56'46" North, 82°0'44" West (39.946049, -82.012150)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.8 km² (11.5 mi²). 29.1 km² (11.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.26% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,586 people, 10,572 households, and 6,438 families residing in the city. The population density is 878.9/km² (2,276.8/mi²). There are 11,662 housing units at an average density of 400.6/km² (1,037.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.48% White, 10.76% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 2.70% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,572 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.5% are married couples living together, 18.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 33.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,642, and the median income for a family is $31,932. Males have a median income of $27,902 versus $20,142 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,192. 22.4% of the population and 19.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.3% are under the age of 18 and 14.8% are 65 or older.
