Yankton County, South Dakota

Yankton County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 21,652. Its county seat is Yankton6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,379 km² (533 mi²). 1,351 km² (522 mi²) of it is land and 29 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.08% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 21,652 people, 8,187 households, and 5,403 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 8,840 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.10% White, 1.16% African American, 1.63% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 1.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,187 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.00% are non-families. 29.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 101.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.30 males.
