Wrangell-Petersburg Census Area, Alaska

Wrangell-Petersburg Census Area is a census area located in the U.S. State of Alaska. As of 2000, the population is 6,684. There is no borough seat.

Geography The census area has a total area of 23,365 km² (9,021 mi²). 15,112 km² (5,835 mi²) of it is land and 8,252 km² (3,186 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 35.32% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 6,684 people, 2,587 households, and 1,764 families residing in the census area. The population density is 0/km² (1/mi²). There are 3,284 housing units at an average density of 0 persons/km² (1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the census area is 73.04% White, 0.22% African American, 16.07% Native American, 1.62% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 7.81% from two or more races. 1.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,587 households out of which 36.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.30% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 31.80% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the census area the population is spread out with 29.70% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 108.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.80 males.
