Worth County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 21,967. The county's county seat is Sylvester, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,488 km² (575 mi²). 1,476 km² (570 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 21,967 people, 8,106 households, and 6,120 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 9,086 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.69% White, 29.57% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,106 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 15.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.50% are non-families. 21.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.60% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,384, and the median income for a family is $38,887. Males have a median income of $31,668 versus $20,950 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,856. 18.50% of the population and 14.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.00% are under the age of 18 and 20.20% are 65 or older.
