Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Wisconsin Dells is located in south-central Wisconsin, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,418, but as a popular Midwestern tourist destination, many thousands more visit it throughout the year.

Wisconsin Dells features striking sandstone rock formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River[?], viewable via boat tours that run spring, summer, and fall.

Other attractions in "the Dells" include waterparks (such as the popular Noah's Ark, the nation's largest), mini golf, go-karts, water sports, horseback riding, the Tommy Bartlett Thrill Show, and many other places of interest. Accommodations range from economical motels to RV parks to extravagant resorts.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.4 km² (4.4 mi²). 10.7 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.68% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,418 people, 1,019 households, and 609 families residing in the city. The population density is 225.0/km² (583.1/mi²). There are 1,178 housing units at an average density of 109.6/km² (284.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.56% White, 0.37% African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,019 households out of which 26.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% are non-families. 34.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,699, and the median income for a family is $46,304. Males have a median income of $29,830 versus $22,553 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,447. 7.5% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.7% are under the age of 18 and 3.0% are 65 or older.
