Winona is a city located in Winona County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 27,069. Winona is the birthplace of actress Winona Ryder. It is the county seat of Winona County6.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 61.0 km² (23.6 mi²). 47.2 km² (18.2 mi²) of it is land and 13.8 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 22.62% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,069 people, 10,301 households, and 5,325 families residing in the city. The population density is 573.3/km² (1,485.0/mi²). There are 10,666 housing units at an average density of 225.9/km² (585.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.47% White, 1.13% African American, 0.23% Native American, 2.65% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,301 households out of which 23.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.4% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.3% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the city the population is spread out with 18.0% under the age of 18, 27.5% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,845, and the median income for a family is $48,413. Males have a median income of $31,047 versus $23,302 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,783. 17.3% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.5% are under the age of 18 and 10.7% are 65 or older.
