Windham County, Connecticut

Windham County is a county located in the northeastern corner of the U.S. State of Connecticut. As of 2000, the population is 109,091.

Geography There are no incorporated cities in Windham County.

The county has a total area of 1,351 km² (521 mi²). 1,328 km² (513 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.67% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 109,091 people, 41,142 households, and 28,223 families residing in the county. The population density is 82/km² (213/mi²). There are 43,959 housing units at an average density of 33 persons/km² (86 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.27% White, 1.87% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.59% from other races, and 1.92% from two or more races. 7.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 41,142 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.30% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 31.40% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,115, and the median income for a family is $52,490. Males have a median income of $38,319 versus $26,745 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,443. 8.50% of the population and 5.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.30% are under the age of 18 and 7.10% are 65 or older.
