Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,496 people, 1,306 households, and 889 families residing in the city. The population density is 377.0/km² (976.3/mi²). There are 1,424 housing units at an average density of 153.6/km² (397.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 80.06% White, 13.07% African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.46% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 10.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,306 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.16.
