Williamson is a city located in Mingo County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,414. It is the county seat of Mingo County6.

Geography Williamson is located at 37°40'26" North, 82°16'47" West (37.673936, -82.279613)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 km² (3.3 mi²). 8.7 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 3,414 people, 1,566 households, and 903 families residing in the city. The population density is 394.7/km² (1,022.6/mi²). There are 1,892 housing units at an average density of 218.7/km² (566.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.51% White, 13.65% African American, 0.38% Native American, 1.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,566 households out of which 24.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.0% are married couples living together, 15.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.3% are non-families. 40.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.11 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,635, and the median income for a family is $35,893. Males have a median income of $36,250 versus $20,291 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,303. 28.8% of the population and 22.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 39.5% are under the age of 18 and 18.2% are 65 or older.
