Wikipedia:TomeRaider database

Redirected from Wikipedia as TomeRaider database

In April 2003, several Wikipedias have been made available in TomeRaider format. It is now possible to download the full Wikipedia to a Pocket PC, Palm OS or EPOC handheld or browse it offline on a Windows PC.

All articles are conserved in the database. However all meta information (user pages, upload info, discussions, etc) has been discarded to save memory (which comes at a premium on handhelds). Also images and sounds are not included. For TeX formulas the TeX code is shown instead of the formula itself.

You may need a memory card. The TomeRaider file for the English Wikipedia measures roughly 110 Mb (but contains > 270 Mb text).

Right now four databases are available for download:

  • English Wikipedia (110 Mb, version of May 7, 2003)
  • German Wikipedia (11 Mb, version of May 7, 2003)
  • Dutch Wikipedia (5 Mb, version of May 7, 2003)
  • Demo database (140 Kb) containing just a few pages from the English Wikipedia

Other languages will be made available on demand.

These are examples of the Wikipedia TomeRaider database on a Pocket PC.

Palm version

From May 10, 2003 there will be a separate version for Palm handhelds, for two reasons:

  • Palm OS or TomeRaider for Palm (which one is not known) suffers from a file size limit of 30 Mb. Therefore a multi volume version of the English Wikipedia has been prepared for the Palm.
  • Also TomeRaider for Palm does not support html yet (it is un undocumented feature in the PPC version anyway). This will change in TomeRaider version 3, which may be released late in 2003. Therefore all html markup tags had to be converted/stripped in the Palm version. As a result a few complex tables are rather messy. Also all colour information is missing.
