Structure

Motivation

  1. Greater London is one of the world's historic conurbations, with a population of more than 10 million. London is structured as a set of urban villages and small towns, and each of these villages and towns needs an article in the Wikipedia.
  2. London is also the home of some of the cultural treasures of the world, such as the British Library and the British Museum. These, and other important places in London, deserve articles here.
  3. London is also the home of three great public transport networks of historic importance: the bus, tube, and railway networks. These should be cross-linked into the other London articles.

Naming conventions

  • Places: as [[Soho, London]] with a redirect from [[Soho]], or a disambiguation page if there is more than one place or thing with this name.
    • Rationale for doing things this way round: many places have been named after places in London. (There are at least two urban villages with the same name in Greater London, and many streets with the same names.) This way round, we run the least possible risk of ambiguity, and the simple plain link still works. It's also handy for spotting articles that are part of this project.
  • Underground lines: as [[Piccadilly Line]]
  • Underground stations: as [[Piccadilly tube station]]
  • Railway stations: as [[Charing Cross rail station]]
  • Dockland Light Railway stations: as [[East India DLR station]]
  • Croydon Tramlink stations: as [[East Croydon Tram station]]
  • Boroughs: as their official full names of [[London Borough of Enfield]] (special cases: the London Borough of the City of Westminster, the City of London, and the two royal boroughs, the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea)

Framework

Done:

  • A shedload of small articles on London places have been auto-generated to create a trellis of linked pre-stub articles about places in London.
  • These have been hand-edited to merge with existing content, and to fill in the correct London borough name for each of these place articles. A name has been filled in for all those on the list as of September 29, 2002, but checking by knowledgeable Londoners would be useful.
  • The few places that actually are not in a London borough, but one of the surrounding counties, were renamed, and the links to them fixed.
To do:
  • The article on the non-obvious system of London postal districts, should be cross-linked to the articles describing the places in that postal district. (maybe within a general article on postcodes in the UK!)
  • Articles on notable London tourist attractions such as Trafalgar Square should be put in the same format as other London place articles.

Substance

Done:

  • Articles on London and an index article for the London boroughs already exist. The links in the London boroughs article have been updated to point to the official names of the boroughs.

To do:

  • There should be an article on all 32 London boroughs, using the borough's official name (usually "London Borough of X"). Each borough article should have a list of localities within that borough at its end, using the naming conventions above.
  • Every locality needs at least a 500-character stub article, built on top of its framework article.
  • All areas of historic importance need substantial articles.
  • Fill in details in London postal districts article: see Talk:London postal district
  • Every London Underground line, and the DLR, should have an article of the same level of quality of, say, the East London Line article, but the list of stations should be the same quaility as the Central Line.

Good articles so far:

Completed Lines in Detail: Central Line Victoria Line Jubilee Line Bakerloo Line Metropolitan Line (Only East London Line Section)
