  1. ハ and ヘ as particles are spelled <wa> and <e> respectively.
  2. ン followed by <b>, <m> or <p> is spelled <m>, the rest <n>.
  3. ン followed by vowels or <y> is spelled <n'>.
  4. ッ doubles the following consonant except for <sh>, <ch> and <ts>. They are spelled <ssh>, <tch> and <tts> respectively.

Examples

  • ろくじょう Rokujo (not Rokujyo)
  • たかふみ Takafumi (not Takahumi)
  • しんぶん Shimbun (not shinbun nor shinbun')

To do: How to treat long vowels?

Name Order

family name + given name (traditional order) or given name + family name (Western order)?

Names should stick to their traditional order, i.e. family Name + given Name. Add a redirect page to link the Western spelling to the traditional order name.

Names for Emperors

This is not settled convention but a tentative suggestion for those who need to mention the name of Japanese emperor right now. Your usage might be changed after the convention is settled. But it is not your responsibility to keep text you wrote consistent with new convention. Never hesitate to contribute an article containing the name of Japanese emperor.

  • Hirohito (not emperor of showa, emperor hirohi and so and)
  • Akihito (not emperor of showa, emperor hirohi and so and)
  • Meiji emperor (not Meiji Emperor, Emperor Meiji)
  • Taisho emperor
  • The rest of emperors are: Emperor {capitalized name} like Emperor Godaigo.

--Why not "Meiji Emperor"? It looks good to have both words capitalized? --Uncle Ed
