Whitley County, Kentucky

Whitley County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 35,865. Its county seat is Williamsburg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,153 km² (445 mi²). 1,140 km² (440 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 35,865 people, 13,780 households, and 9,894 families residing in the county. The population density is 31/km² (82/mi²). There are 15,288 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.37% White, 0.34% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,780 households out of which 33.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 10.80% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $22,075, and the median income for a family is $27,871. Males have a median income of $26,518 versus $17,001 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,777. 26.40% of the population and 21.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.10% are under the age of 18 and 19.00% are 65 or older.
