Whitefish Township, Michigan

Whitefish Township is a township located in Chippewa County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 588.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 760.0 km² (293.5 mi²). 625.5 km² (241.5 mi²) of it is land and 134.5 km² (52.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.70% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 588 people, 285 households, and 196 families residing in the township. The population density is 0.9/km² (2.4/mi²). There are 1,087 housing units at an average density of 1.7/km² (4.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.41% White, 0.17% African American, 2.72% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 285 households out of which 15.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.47.

In the township the population is spread out with 14.8% under the age of 18, 2.9% from 18 to 24, 20.6% from 25 to 44, 35.0% from 45 to 64, and 26.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 53 years. For every 100 females there are 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $29,432, and the median income for a family is $34,659. Males have a median income of $28,542 versus $27,708 for females. The per capita income for the township is $18,154. 12.5% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.7% are under the age of 18 and 8.9% are 65 or older.
