Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,997 people, 828 households, and 579 families residing in the town. The population density is 303.6/km² (786.7/mi²). There are 886 housing units at an average density of 134.7/km² (349.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.74% White, 0.90% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.20% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 2.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 828 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are nonfamilies. 27.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
