Wheeler County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 6,179. The county's county seat is Alamo, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 777 km² (300 mi²). 771 km² (298 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.81% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,179 people, 2,011 households, and 1,395 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (21/mi²). There are 2,447 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.56% White, 33.18% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 3.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,011 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.40% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 31.60% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 128.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 139.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,053, and the median income for a family is $29,696. Males have a median income of $27,203 versus $22,679 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,005. 25.30% of the population and 21.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.20% are under the age of 18 and 26.70% are 65 or older.
