According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.08% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 32,498 people, 9,519 households, and 7,386 families residing in the town. The population density is 2,739.6/km² (7,093.3/mi²). There are 10,298 housing units at an average density of 868.1/km² (2,247.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 32.53% White, 57.22% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 5.49% from other races, and 4.25% from two or more races. 40.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,519 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% are married couples living together, 27.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% are non-families. 17.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.39 and the average family size is 3.75.
