Geography The parish has a total area of 933 km² (360 mi²). 931 km² (359 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 12,314 people, 4,458 households, and 3,249 families residing in the parish. The population density is 13/km² (34/mi²). There are 4,980 housing units at an average density of 5 persons/km² (14 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the parish is 79.89% White, 18.88% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,458 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 12.30% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 27.10% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the parish the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older.
