West Carroll Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana. As of 2000, the population is 12,314.

Geography The parish has a total area of 933 km2 (360 mi2). 931 km2 (359 mi2) of it is land and 2 km2 (1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 12,314 people, 4,458 households, and 3,249 families residing in the parish. The population density is 13/km2 (34/mi2). There are 4,980 housing units at an average density of 5 persons/km2 (14 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 79.89% White, 18.88% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,458 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 12.30% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 27.10% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the parish the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 102.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.50 males.

The median income for a household in the parish is $24,637, and the median income for a family is $31,806. Males have a median income of $28,211 versus $18,477 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $12,302. 23.40% of the population and 18.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.80% are under the age of 18 and 22.30% are 65 or older.
