Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,619 people, 1,020 households, and 775 families residing in the city. The population density is 381.6/km² (990.0/mi²). There are 1,133 housing units at an average density of 165.1/km² (428.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.06% White, 8.67% African American, 0.46% Native American, 1.18% Asian, 0.34% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. 2.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,020 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.0% are non-families. 21.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 2.96.
