Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,228 people, 954 households, and 601 families residing in the city. The population density is 349.7/km² (904.2/mi²). There are 1,071 housing units at an average density of 168.1/km² (434.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.04% White, 1.39% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 954 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.84.
