Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,680 km² (649 mi²). 1,670 km² (645 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.64% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 26,565 people, 9,324 households, and 6,937 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 10,827 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.73% White, 20.32% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 3.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,324 households out of which 35.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 14.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.60% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 108.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 109.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,766, and the median income for a family is $39,442. Males have a median income of $31,977 versus $19,551 for females.
