Watonwan County, Minnesota

Watonwan County is a county located in the U.S. State of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 11,876. Its county seat is St. James6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,139 km² (440 mi²). 1,125 km² (435 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.23% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,876 people, 4,627 households, and 3,141 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (27/mi²). There are 5,036 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.54% White, 0.37% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.87% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 8.78% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 15.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,627 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 7.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.10% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.60% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 24.30% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 18.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,441, and the median income for a family is $42,321. Males have a median income of $29,242 versus $19,788 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,413. 9.80% of the population and 7.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.50% are under the age of 18 and 8.80% are 65 or older.
