Washington County, Pennsylvania

Washington County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 202,897. Its county seat is Washington6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,230 km² (861 mi²). 2,220 km² (857 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.45% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 202,897 people, 81,130 households, and 56,060 families residing in the county. The population density is 91/km² (237/mi²). There are 87,267 housing units at an average density of 39/km² (102/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.27% White, 3.26% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 81,130 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 92.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.00 males.
