Washington County is a county located in the U.S. State of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 20,973. Its county seat is Chipley, Florida6.

History Washington County was created in 1825. It was named for George Washington, first President of the United States of America, who served from 1789 to 1797.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,595 km² (616 mi²). 1,502 km² (580 mi²) of it is land and 93 km² (36 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.82% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 20,973 people, 7,931 households, and 5,646 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 9,503 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.72% White, 13.69% African American, 1.54% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. 2.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,931 households out of which 30.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 25.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 105.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,922, and the median income for a family is $33,057. Males have a median income of $26,597 versus $20,198 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,980. 19.20% of the population and 15.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.90% are under the age of 18 and 19.40% are 65 or older.
