Demographics As of 2000, there are 10,909 people, 3,964 households, and 2,929 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (13/mi²). There are 4,832 housing units at an average density of 2 persons/km² (6 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.79% White, 4.61% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 12.52% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 41.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,964 households out of which 36.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.80% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 26.10% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
