Ward County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 10,909.

Geography The county has a total area of 2,165 km2 (836 mi2). 2,164 km2 (835 mi2) of it is land and 1 km2 (0 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 10,909 people, 3,964 households, and 2,929 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km2 (13/mi2). There are 4,832 housing units at an average density of 2 persons/km2 (6 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 79.79% White, 4.61% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 12.52% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 41.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,964 households out of which 36.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.80% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 26.10% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county, the population is spread out with 30.60% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,386, and the median income for a family is $36,014. Males have a median income of $31,373 versus $18,198 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,393. 17.90% of the population and 15.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.30% are under the age of 18 and 20.10% are 65 or older.
