Walker County, Alabama

Walker County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of John W. Walker, a member of the United States Senate. As of 2000 the population was 70,713. Its county seat is Jasper.

History Walker County was established on December 26, 1823.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,086 km² (805 mi²). 2,057 km² (794 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.35% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 70,713 people, 28,364 households, and 20,478 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (89/mi²). There are 32,417 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (41/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.15% White, 6.17% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 28,364 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.30% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,076, and the median income for a family is $35,221. Males have a median income of $31,242 versus $20,089 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,546. 16.50% of the population and 13.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.00% are under the age of 18 and 17.40% are 65 or older.
