Waldo County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 36,280. Its county seat is Belfast6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,209 km² (853 mi²). 1,890 km² (730 mi²) of it is land and 319 km² (123 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.43% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 36,280 people, 14,726 households, and 10,057 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (50/mi²). There are 18,904 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.89% White, 0.19% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,726 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.70% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,986, and the median income for a family is $40,402. Males have a median income of $29,644 versus $23,816 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,438. 13.90% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.60% are under the age of 18 and 12.20% are 65 or older.
