Demographics As of the census¹ of 2000, there are 3,824 people, 1,553 households, and 1,108 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (14/mi²). There are 1,792 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.46% White, 0.26% African American, 1.57% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.65% from other races, and 2.51% from two or more races. 2.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,553 households out of which 26.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 6.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.83.
