Waelder is a city located in Gonzales County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 947.

Geography Waelder is located at 29°41'37" North, 97°17'54" West (29.693658, -97.298288)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.78% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 947 people, 334 households, and 224 families residing in the city. The population density is 285.7/km² (740.4/mi²). There are 413 housing units at an average density of 124.6/km² (322.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 50.16% White, 24.50% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 23.55% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 60.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 334 households out of which 35.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.7% are married couples living together, 17.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 27.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.50.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 106.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,381, and the median income for a family is $26,625. Males have a median income of $17,244 versus $12,679 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,181. 27.8% of the population and 25.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 41.5% are under the age of 18 and 23.6% are 65 or older.
